Our Experience

This Prolific review is based on my experience of using the platform over a period of 6 months.

I've personally completed a variety of remote and in-person testing, earning over $1000 from uTest alone (~£800 at time of writing).

How It Works

With uTest, you help companies test and improve their products. Generally, projects require you to fill out a short application form, or you are offered projects based on you profile. Jobs range from in-person to remote, and usually require you to complete a set list of tasks. For example, you may be asked to complete a transaction on a new app, or test a beta version of a new piece of technology. You'll then be asked to provide feedback or record the details of any bugs you encountered.

Pay

uTest offers a wide variety of testing opportunities, with pay rates varying considerably between them. During my time on the platform, I have noticed three key type of testing:

1. There are regular website/app testing cases with pay rates in the region of $15/hour (£11.50/hour at time of writing). Given the detailed instructions needed, I have not prioritised these.

2. The in-person testing, which only occurs in major UK cities, has much higher pay rates with £50+/hour common.

3. Finally, there are specialist testing cases that require devices to be sent to your home, or for you to own specific devices. The pay rates for these can be significantly higher with 50 USD/hour (~£40/hour) not uncommon.

Given the varying pay rates, I prioritise the in-person testing when the location is close enough, and the specialist testing.

"I have recently started a uTest project that will pay in excess of £750 over a 2-week period for between 1 and 1.5 hours work per day."

Job Availability

By populating your profile on uTest, you'll be invited to matching tests. Testing jobs can fill up quickly, so it is a good idea to claim a testing slot as soon as possible for the high-paying projects. Due to prioritising the highest paying projects only, I compete a test every two weeks on average. However, the platform has a large number of testing opportunities and a rating system for workers so there is an opportunity to complete much more work in an attempt to unlock better testing jobs. If you have significant experience on uTest, please help the community by posting about it in the comments below or in the Verified Hustles Community.

Requirements

You have to be over 18 to earn money with uTest, but no other specific requirements or skills are required.

There is a large amount of high-quality training material on the uTest website to help you improve your testing skills.

Reliability and Experience

The uTest website is reliable and relatively easy to use, though it can take a while to get used to the user interface.

Projects generally have dedicated uTest employees who you can reach out to for guidance if you get stuck.

As the site is such a large company, it is very dependable in terms of being paid quickly and accurately for your work.

Review Summary

The Verdict:
uTest is a professional and trustworthy side gig. The best paying tasks aren't very frequent, but pay rates can be very high if you pick the right jobs (£50+/hour). Recommended to add to your side hustle portfolio.
