Our Experience
This review of outlier.ai is based on my experience of using the platform over a period of 3 months.
I've personally earned over £1000 from AI training on outlier.ai from 80+ hours on the platform at a pay rate of 15 USD/hour.
How It Works
With outlier.ai, you are paid to help train and review some of the leading AI models. No technical experience is required, and all training is available on the website. Pay is generally per hour, and you'll complete tasks such as writing AI prompts, reviewing AI model responses, and reviewing other workers' work.
Pay
Outlier.ai pay varies by project. For UK based workers, the pay starts from 15 USD/hour for "Generalists" (those without specialist knowledge such as coding). This is the equivalent of £11.50/hour at time of writing.
For "Specialists", pay rates can be considerably higher with rates up to 50 USD/hour but advanced degree or professional level knowledge is required.
The pay rates are provided up front, so you'll know how much you'll be paid when you start a task. Workers have reported having pay rates cut without explanation in the past, but only for pay moving forwards so you should always earn what you see on your project before you start work.
There are other AI training websites with higher pay rates, but they can be more difficult to be accepted.
Job Availability
There is a near limitless supply of AI training work for workers that produce good quality work. Your work will be regularly reviewed and rated, and poor performing workers may see their work reduced or be removed from the platform. You should always be paid for the work you've completed, but you should not rely on this income due to the uncertainty of future work.
At a pay rate of 15 USD/hour, a 40-hour work week and working for 45 weeks a year would result in 27,000 USD/year (around £21,000/year at time of writing).
There are higher paying AI training websites.
Requirements
Outlier.ai requires an application process where you'll submit your CV. You'll need a minimum of a strong understanding of written English and clear communication skills. The skills required are listed on the job descriptions for eac type of role. You will need to be aged 18+.
Reliability and Experience
From our experience, we have always been paid on time and without issue. However, we have seen many reports of workers being removed from projects without warning, or having their pay rate cut considerably.
Our experience has only been positive, but we encourage users not to rely on the income and to diversify their income sources.
Review Summary
- Transparent pay rates for projects, starting at 15 USD/hour.
- A large amount of work available. This can be a full time hustle, but should not be relied upon due to the uncertainty of being removed from projects.
- Users report that it is easier to be accepted by the platform than some other AI training companies.
- The work is mentally challenging and requires significant effort.
- The pay is lower than some other AI training companies.
- Communication can be poor and users have reported being removed from projects or works without explanation.
